Sophie’s Thoughts on Theater: Why I Prefer Plays Over Movies

Hey everyone, it’s Sophie again! So, let’s talk about something near and dear to my heart: theater. As much as I love a good movie now and then (who doesn’t enjoy a cozy movie night?), I have to admit—I’m absolutely obsessed with live theater. There’s something about the energy, the immediacy, and the connection between the actors and the audience that movies just can’t replicate.

I’ve had the privilege of being a part of some amazing productions in high school, and this year, I’m thrilled to be in Grease! I’m channeling my inner Sandy, which means there’s a lot of fun hair flips, singing, and definitely a whole lot of leather jackets involved. (I mean, who doesn’t love a good musical number, right?) Last year, I was lucky enough to perform in Anything Goes, and let me tell you, tapping my way across the stage was an absolute blast. There’s something about being in front of a live audience, hearing their laughs, their gasps, and their applause—it’s like you’re all part of a story happening in real-time.

Plays have this magic that movies can’t quite match. While movies are amazing and offer incredible visuals, special effects, and epic soundtracks, there’s something so special about seeing a live performance unfold right in front of you. You can feel the energy of the actors, hear their voices echo in the theater, and even see the mistakes or surprises that make each show unique. Every night is a different experience! The thrill of live theater is hard to beat. Plus, the costumes, the sets, the music—it all just adds to the atmosphere.

One of the things I love most is the community. Whether it’s the cast, the crew, or the audience, everyone is there for the same reason: to experience something unforgettable together. It’s the ultimate team effort, and it’s honestly one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.

So, while movies are great for a cozy night in, if you ever have the chance to see a play—or even better, be a part of one—I highly recommend it. There’s nothing like the thrill of performing live or watching something come to life on stage.

And hey, if you’re in the area and want to see me rock out in Grease, I’ll be the one in the big, puffy skirt and singing my heart out!
